❄️ December Newsletter: Embracing the Stillness of Winter
Tai Mautia Taino Woods Sanctuary Community,
As December ushers in the quiet strength of winter, we reflect on the cycles of the seasons and the power of community in nurturing our collective growth. Together, let us honor this time of introspection, connection, and gratitude.
Seasonal Reflection: The Winter Solstice and Yoka Hu
In Taino cosmology, the Winter Solstice marks a pivotal moment in the journey of Yoka Hu, the male spirit associated with the yucca plant and a symbol of Energy and Life. During this time, Yoka Hu retreats into the depths of Coa Bay, the sacred womb of Ata Bey (Mother Earth), to regenerate and prepare for his rebirth at the Spring Equinox. This cyclical journey reflects the natural rhythms of death and rebirth, inviting us to embrace the stillness of winter as a time for introspection and renewal.
For a deeper exploration of this narrative and its cultural significance, we encourage you to read Behike Miguel Sague’s article, “What is Solstice?” on the Indigenous Caribbean Network.
As we honor the Winter Solstice, let us reflect on Yoka Hu‘s journey and consider how we, too, can find resilience and prepare for our own rebirths in the coming seasons.

Together, we’ll embrace the stillness of the season, release what no longer serves us, and prepare for new beginnings.

Community Reflections: Gratitude and Growth
As we move into the final month of 2024, we want to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the beauty and energy of Taino Woods Sanctuary this past month.
🍂 Final Volunteer Weekend of 2024
To our incredible volunteers who joined us on November 9th and 10th, thank you for your dedication and hard work as we prepared the land for winter. Together, we closed down the Itaino communal camping site, dismantled tents, and ensured the sanctuary is ready for the colder months. A special thank you to DJ Renaissance, whose soul-awakening beats kept us inspired and energized throughout the weekend! Your efforts continue to embody the spirit of community and love that makes Taino Woods so special.
🌿 Los Niños Tea Ceremony & Purification Lodge
We also reflect with immense gratitude on the profound experiences shared during Los Niños Tea Ceremony and Purification Lodge on November 30th. This sacred gathering invited us to reflect on the question: What do you want to create?—in yourself, in your life, and in the world around you. Together, we held space for deep prayer, transformative connections, and the planting of intentions for the paths ahead. Thank you to all who joined us for this meaningful journey of self-discovery and creation.
